Original purpose: Quenching your thirst.

Aha! use: Cleaning lime deposits and iron stains inside the dishwasher. Pour a packet of lemonade Kool-Aid (the only flavor that works) into the detergent cup and run the (empty) dishwasher.

Reward: Citric acid in the mix wipes out stains; you don't have to.

Rubber Bands as Strap Securers

Aha! use: Keeping camisoles and sundresses from slipping off their hangers. For this stop-strap measure, wrap a band (or two if you use skinny ones) around each end of a hanger.

By Fiskars! Love it ~ Not only is it pretty and pink, it also plays music. Yes, you heard that right. Just plug in any MP3 player or iPod and rest it on the dock at the top of the trimmer, and you can rock out to your favorite tunes through the two speakers on the left.

Wooden shutters can be just as functional and good-looking indoors as out. This refinished trio hangs on the wall over a hallway console. Their louvers are a perfect (not to mention plentiful) spot to tuck invitations, display artwork, or hang a message pad. Vintage coat hooks also get a new use; they are mounted on a wooden plaque and put to work corralling the daily mail.

We had a great time meeting you and sharing ideas and tips! I'm taking my kids to help me shop for ALL the toys for Santa's Anonymous! Our carts will be overloaded thanks to you!

Take your picture frames up a notch by adhering a couple of them to a mat board or foam-core board covered in patterned paper. Imagine your creation is a really big scrapbook page and embellish with large flowers, brads, and bits of fabric and paper. Finish it with wood letters painted to match your scheme.

Start your day with an affirmation done up in high style. All it takes is a mirror and rub-ons. The only rules are to start with a clean surface and draw light lines with a crayon-tip pencil to ensure straight placement. Work backward from the end of each line for perfect spacing. A razor blade will make quick work of erasing your lines or any errant rub-ons.

Wow, it's been awhile since I've kept up with my posting ~ been very busy planning our Scrappy Days retreat to be held here in Athabasca in a month! FUN, FUN, FUN!

I came across these cool ideas and wanted to share ~ I would love to create them!

Pop-Art Palette

With a little paint and some foam-core board, nine fun cards form a spiffy piece of artwork. Start by painting a 22” square on your wall in a color that contrasts with your existing wall color. Use adhesive spray to mount your cards onto same-size pieces of foam-core board. Attach the squares to the painted square with double-sided carpet tape, and voila!—an Andy Warhol-like look without the price.

It can happen to the best of SCRAPBOOKERS. It can happen to the best-intentioned want-to-be-scrappers, too. It can strike while staring at a blank scrapbook page, paralyzed about what to do next. It can set in when you’re standing in the aisles of your local scrapbook store, surrounded by choices, options, and embellishments galore. It can hit when you pick up your 100th pack of un-scrapbooked photos from the developer. Suddenly, where once you had an enjoyable hobby you love, now you have DREAD.
DO YOU KNOW THE FEELINGI call it scrapbook OVERWHELM and you’ll know you’re a victim when scrapbooking isn’t fun anymore (or you’re intimidated by the idea of starting to scrapbook to begin with.) Scrapbook overwhelm strikes when "too much" leads to less: less fun and less scrapbooking getting done. When overwhelm strikes, you have a few choices.
load up on even more scrapbook supplies and HOPE inspiration and clarity will suddenly strike when you get your new goodies home
SELL your scrapbook supplies on eBay and pretend this adventure in scrapbooking was just a dream with a not so happy ending
or take a step back, regain your perspective and put the FUN back into scrapbookingWant option 3? Read on! Just ahead are simple strategies to help you overcome overwhelm and put the fun back into scrapbooking!
TAKE STOCK OF THE OVERWHELMScrapbook overwhelm is typically a symptom of too much STUFF getting in the way of what you want. It can be too much photo backlog, too much product, too many ideas, too many incomplete pages or projects, lofty expectations about what is possible to accomplish in the time you have available for scrapbooking, or too much perfectionism. To overcome overwhelm, start by figuring out WHERE you have "too much" going on with your scrapbooking.
RE-CLARIFY YOUR GOALSWhy did you start scrapbooking in the first place? Sometimes, with the lure of all the amazing and beautiful products, it’s easy to get lost on our pathway to scrapbook happiness. If you get back to the basics about WHY you wanted to engage in this hobby to begin with, everything falls back into place. Maybe you wanted to get your photos organized into albums so you could enjoy sharing them with family and friends. Perhaps you wanted to create a special scrapbook to document your travels. Or maybe you just wanted a creative outlet or an excuse to spend more time with friends. Get back to the BASICS by clearly defining your reasons for scrapbooking and why it’s an important aspect of your life.
PARE DOWNArmed with new knowledge from taking stock and re-clarifying your goals, now it’s time to pare down. FILTER out anything that’s standing between you and your goals. Let go of your sources of overwhelm. Let go of excess ideas. Pare down to only your favorite and most important products. COMPLETE your half-finished pages, even if it means giving yourself permission to do it less than perfectly. Need more ideas? Read on.
LET GO OF LIMITING EXPECTATIONSDo you have ideas about what scrapbooking is or what it SHOULD be? Does it mean putting every single photo into scrapbooks in chronological order? Does it mean spending eight hours on a page, shuffling around photos, products and embellishments until everything is just perfect? Does it mean having to remember every exact detail about who, what, when, where and why so you can include this in your journaling? Scrapbooking can be about all of those things, if that makes you happy. But if living up to these expectations is getting in the way of your fun -- let go of them! Scrapbooking can be WHATEVER you want it to be. Want to slide your photos into a photo album, add an embellishment or two and record the date? Great! That’s a scrapbook! Want to create a notebook to jot down quotes your kids’ say and maybe add a photo here and there? Fantastic! Call it a scrapbook and be happy!
TACKLE PHOTO BACKLOG IN BURSTSCarve out small bursts of time to do SORTING. For example, commit to spending 30 minutes per evening, three days a week on sorting photos. Or decide to sort through one box a week, working in one hour time blocks. Decide on a schedule you can commit to -- and then keep at it! As you sort, keep in mind your scrapbooking GOALS. Pull out the photos you truly love and want to put in scrapbooks and find a permanent home for the rest. To keep up your momentum, once you have a group of photos together that would make a nice mini-album or page, take a break and create your page or album! You’ll feel energized and ready to tackle the rest of your backlog.
PLAY FAVORITESConsider scrapbooking only your very favorite photos! There’s no rule that says if you start scrapbooking you must scrapbook ALL of your photos. If you’re overwhelmed with your current plan, consider focusing on just your very favorite photos -- those that tug at your heartstrings when you see them or help you recall a special time in your life. Scrapbooking does not have to be an all or nothing proposition. It’s perfectly acceptable to scrapbook only your most important photos and keep the rest STORED safely in photo boxes or traditional photo albums.
THINK SMALLSometimes the mere size of a 12 x 12 scrapbook page can be overwhelming. There’s simply a lot of SPACE to fill and so many options for pulling it all together. (If you’re a shuffler, you know what I mean.) Give some of the other sizes a try and make a MINI-ALBUM on a single topic or theme. You’ll let go of the overwhelm caused by the mere size of a 12 x 12 scrapbook plus get a burst of excitement from accomplishing a complete project!
THINK BIG!Sound contradictory? Well, I’m talking about big in terms of IMPORTANCE. What are your most important memories? Focus on scrapbooking MEMORIES instead of focusing on photos. Create an album recounting your most precious childhood memories. Make a page about your Mom’s chocolate chip cookies. Create a photo journal about the day-to-day happenings in your home -- those things that make life rich.
CAPTURE JUST THE IMPORTANT DETAILSEvery page doesn’t have to have a day, month, and year on it to be a scrapbook. Capture the ESSENCE of the photo or memory. What makes the photo special to you? What makes this memory or day stand out from all the rest?
CONSIDER USING KITSScrapbook kits take the DESIGN dilemmas out of the scrapbook process. If design and product selection are a source of overwhelm for you, a kit could be just your ticket to a life free of scrapbook overwhelm.
WHEN YOU FIND WHAT WORKS, KEEP DOING ITScrapbooking, like life, is a JOURNEY. You’ll run into road bumps and times when your approach to scrapbooking isn’t working for you and you need to take a detour. You’ll also find times when you’re cruising down the road and everything is smooth sailing. When you find yourself in those glory days -- take stock of what’s working. When you find solutions that work for you, keep doing them. If you find a layout you love, use it in many albums or layouts. Find a manufacturer you love -- load up! Likewise, when you find something isn’t working for you, step back and make a CHANGE -- before overwhelm strikes again.
THE END RESULTWhen you focus on your goals and pare down to the most ESSENTIAL elements -- scrapbooking is an amazing journey -- a way to cherish your past and connect to your present in a way like no other. Remember to have fun on the journey and you’ll be FREE from overwhelm in no time!

Get Rid of Ants
Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take It "home," and can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a Week or so, especially if it rains, but it works and you don't Have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!

Reheat Pizza
Heat up leftover pizza in a non stick skillet on top of the stove, Set heat to medium low and heat till warm. This keeps the crust Crispy. No soggy micro pizza. I saw this on the cooking channel And it really works..

Easy Devilled Eggs
Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they are All broken up. Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing It up mixing thoroughly, cut the corner tip of the baggy, squeeze Mixture into egg. Just throw bag away when done easy clean up.

Expanding Frosting
When you buy a container of cake frosting from the store, whip it With your mixer for a few minutes. You can double it in size. You Get to frost more cake/cupcakes with the same amount. You also eat
Less sugar/calories per serving.

Reheating refrigerated bread
To warm bread, biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, Place them in a microwave with a cup of water. The increased Moisture will keep the food moist and help it reheat faster.OR - cover with a small terry towel, it will absorb the moister and the Item will come out perfect

Newspaper weeds away
Start putting in your plants; work the nutrients in your soil. Wet Newspapers put layers around the plants overlapping as you go Cover with mulch and forget about weeds. Weeds will get through Some gardening plastic they will not get through wet newspapers.

Broken Glass
Use a dry cotton ball to pick up little broken glass pieces of Glass- the fibers catch ones you can't see!

No More Mosquitoes
Place a dryer sheet in your pocket. It will keep the mosquitoes away.

Squirrel Away!
To keep squirrels from eating your plants sprinkle plants With cayenne pepper. Cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant and the squirrels won't come near it.

Flexible vacuum
To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum hose. It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings.

Reducing Static Cling
Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose. Place pin in seam of slacks and - Voila- static is gone.

Measuring Cups
Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill it with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don't dry the cup. Next, add your ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out

Foggy Windshield?
Hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the Glove box of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser! It works better than a cloth!

Reopening envelope
If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Voila! It unseals easily.

Conditioner
Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's a lot cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a great way to use up the conditioner you bought but didn't like when you tried it in your hair.

Goodbye Fruit Flies
To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass fill it 1/2" with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid, mix well.. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!

Take baby powder to the beach
Keep a small bottle of baby powder in your beach bag. When your ready to leave the beach sprinkle yourself and kids with the powder and the sand will slide right off your skin.

Incubate and Date!I recently reorganized my utensil drawer in my kitchen. I love kitchen gadgets and it seems mine had multiplied while I wasn't looking. Three pair of tongs. Twelve extra knives. An extra ice cream scoop. A nut cracker? (I have no clue the last time I needed a nut cracker.) Instead of trying to justify why I needed to keep all these nifty gadgets, I loaded them into an extra bin to incubate for a month. I kept the bin in my basement. If I was in my kitchen and suddenly needed a nut cracker, a quick trip down the stairs and I was back in business. I'd take the nut cracker out of the bin and back into the utensil drawer. Essentially, I had a month to figure out if I really needed any of these gadgets or not. Guess what? I didn't make a single trip to the incubator. (Not even for the nutcracker as shocking as that may seen.) The following article appeared in the 2007 Winter edition of “Women with Vision” magazine. Often the clients in my organizing practice suffer less from lack of space than from lack of time or lack of motivation to store things away into the space that they have available. From time to time we are all guilty of procrastination or postponing decisions. Left unattended, decisions, paper and piles of stuff simply clutter up our lives.

Therefore, I am proposing that Canada creates a semi-annual Get it Done Day. I am recommending that we assign all of those tasks that we’ve been meaning to do and “get it done” on the day that daylight savings time starts and repeat our To Do list again in the fall when the clocks switch back. Remember that daylight savings time starts earlier this year. It’s been moved forward from April to Sunday, March 11, 2007 and I couldn’t be happier. It gives us all a chance to get something done before the end of the first quarter of 2007 and if you have children, you’ll have them home for March Break so delegate some of the household workload.

Get it Done ActivitiesHere are some health and safety related items to put on your “get it done” list.

 Switch to Daylight Savings Time – set clocks ahead one hour on March 11, 2007.

 Change the batteries in your smoke alarm, carbon dioxide alarm and all flashlights.

 Prepare and practice a family emergency plan including fire escape routines.

 Review your emergency supplies and replenish or replace water and food supplies.

 Label your circuit breaker panel or fuse box and in older homes, tighten the fuses to ensure that they are working.

 Makeover your medicine chest. Discard expired medications and dispose of them at your local pharmacy.

 Create a medication checklist of prescriptions and over the counter items you regularly use so it’s easy to stock up next time.

 Assemble a comprehensive first aid kit and store it where it can be easily accessed, almost anywhere except the bathroom.

 Make an appointment for everyone’s semi annual dental checkup.

 Make an appointment for annual physicals for each family member.

 Put your car in for a tune up and regular maintenance.

 Flip the mattresses in each bedroom.

We live in a society starved for what I call “completion energy”. Many of the outstanding tasks in our lives such as preparing our tax return are either overwhelming, boring or time consuming. That is why it is important to knock off some of these important items from our “to do” list before there is an urgent need.

7 Steps to Making a Scrapbook Page

Have you found yourself staring at a giant stack of photos wondering how you'll ever put together your first page—let alone an entire book? Here are seven basic "how to's" that will make creating scrapbook pages a snap.
1.
Sort your photos and select a theme to work on (generally, 5-7 photos fit on a two-page spread and 3-5 photos fit on a single page). Keep in mind that you don't have to scrapbook every photograph—select only the best photos to highlight the event, feeling or moment you want to convey.
2.
Select 2-3 colors of safe paper that will complement colors found in the photographs. Experiment with different color combinations to find the perfect colors to enhance your photographs. You may want to include stationery or decorative paper that supports the theme of your pages.
3.
Choose a photo to be your focal point. As a general rule, select photos with sharp images, vivid colors and well-lit subjects.
4.
Shape and mat your photos to add extra prominence to your focal point. You can do this easily by matting your photo with a wider border than the others, or double or triple-matting it. While shaping your photos, keep in mind that simple shapes such as rectangles, ovals, circles and squares are among the most eye-pleasing shapes. If irrelevant or distracting details appear in the background, simply trim them out. Keep in mind that this doesn't mean you have to cut out all of the background—frequently, ordinary items pictured in the background will bring a flood of memories essential to journaling and reminiscing.
5.
Add journaling. No page is complete without adding your thoughts, feelings and experiences. Take a few minutes to write down not only the "who" and "when," but also the "what" and "why."
6.
Arrange photos, journaling and titles on your page. As you arrange these elements, pay close attention to the direction your eye moves. In general, well-designed pages are well balanced and will follow a natural flow that mimics the letter Z. To check the balance, imagine that your layout is on a scale. Does one side tip the scale? Once you're pleased with the layout, simply adhere the elements to the page.
7.
Try a few extras. As you get more comfortable with scrapbooking, try your hand with some embellishments—stickers, die cuts, rubber stamps and punches are among the most popular page accents. Use these items sparingly—you don't want them to overpower your photos.
Congratulations! You've successfully completed your first scrapbook page without a hitch. You'll find that as you scrapbook more and more, you will develop your own style, but these tried-and-true basics will serve as a strong foundation. Happy scrapping!

How to Mat Your Photos
1. Decide on the shape of your photo.
2. Using acid-free and photo-safe adhesives, adhere the photo onto a piece of cardstock or decorative paper that is slightly larger than your photo.
3. You can vary the widths of the paper borders to add more or less prominence to the photo. For variety, try cutting your paper with decorative-edged scissors.

And, you might be more willing to do so if it weren't so difficult to get photos of yourself or so darn painful to look at the photos you have (I'm right huh?) But, did you know that you don't really need a photo of you, to scrapbook you? It's true. This class is designed to help you scrapbook the evidence of you - some of the little things that together describe your "essence."
I think, in taking this class, you will discover how much "you" there is in your surroundings. It is this evidence gathered and documented that creates a composite story - a story that is surprisingly descriptive and personal ~ complete in a mini-album for you to share with friends/family!

I'm not packing the tree away for another week!

Problem: The light strings are always tangled, and you don’t know what kind of replacements you need for the dead and faded bulbs.Solution: Whenever you buy a new string of lights, immediately label the plug with a number keyed to a written description of it (the type and number of bulbs in the strand, for example, and where you purchased it). That way, any damaged bulbs will be easy to replace, says Steve Pearson, a three-time winner of the Merriam, Kansas, Festival of Lights Contest. As for the knots and snarls, Taylor offers this tip: Take an empty coffee can, cut a slit in the plastic lid, and put the receptacle end of the light cord through it. Wrap the string around the can, store extra bulbs and extension cords inside, then replace the lid. (When it’s time to unpack the lights again, plug each strand into an electrical outlet to make sure it works before you unroll it.) Always store colored lights in a dark place to keep the bulbs from fading (blues, greens, and purples fade faster than reds and yellows do).

Problem: “Santa’s” suit is starting to look dusty and worn.Solution: “If your costumes are homemade or valuable to you, treat them as you would a wedding dress,” says decorating expert Kelley Taylor. “Dry-clean them, press them, and keep them folded neatly in a sealed, acid-free container so that no moisture or moths can get in.”

Problem: Half-used rolls of gift wrap wind up torn or wrinkled.Solution: “Consider limiting yourself to one or two kinds of all-occasion gift wrap and one or two colors of ribbons and bows that you can use all year,” says author Donna Smallin. If you must have themed wrap for every occasion, she adds, you can protect any opened rolls by cutting a leg from a pair of panty hose, slipping it over the tube, and securing the open end with a twist tie. Or slit an empty wrapping-paper tube from end to end and slide it over the partial roll.

Problem: Artificial wreaths get crushed or become mildewy.Solution: “Cover indoor wreaths with plastic bags, then hang them on the walls in a spare closet or on two-by-fours in your attic,” says former special events director Sandy Stuckey. “Put one nail on top and one just below the base so the wreath keeps its round shape.” Artificial wreaths and garlands that have been displayed outdoors require an additional step: “Bring them inside to a warm spot first and let them dry for 24 hours before storing them,” says Kevin York, vice president of Christmas Decor, a home-decorating company in Lubbock, Texas.

Problem: Plastic lawn ornaments and other large, oddly shaped decorations take up too much space when boxed.Solution: When you buy new clothes, save the zippered garment bags and use them to protect bulky plastic figures, such as sleighs and reindeer, suggests author Valerie Parr Hill. Just came across this cool website and thought I would share these neat ideas for Christmas!

If you've been expending energy getting more organized lately, the approaching holiday may have you filled with mixed feelings. It's likely you're relationship with "stuff" isn't what it's always been. You may have a new found appreciation for clutter --- more specifically, avoiding it at all costs. This new relationship with stuff adds an interesting twist to the traditional holiday shopping extravaganza. Doesn't it? How do you balance the spirit of gift giving with the desire to avoid clutter? The first step is to decide what clutter is to you and those on your shopping list. Then, employ shopping strategies that avoid clutter for you and those you love. I think of clutter as anything that is taking up space, getting in the way, or not serving its intended purpose. It's something that takes away energy, instead of creating it. You may have a slightly different definition of clutter, but the key to giving (or receiving) clutter-free gifts is purposeful gift giving. Giving something that will be used and enjoyed by the recipient.Here are some tips and ideas for creating a clutter-free holiday in your gift giving and receiving.

1. Ask your gift recipients for some ideas. What's on your gift recipient's wish list this year? The best way to avoid your gift becoming clutter is to buy something they've pre-selected and really want. You know they'll use it and you know they'll love it. You can add a personal touch by adding something that goes well with the original gift. For example, if your friend wants a coffee press, include a bag of gourmet coffee and some after coffee mints. If your husband has a book on his wish list, add a book mark. If your daughter wants a journal, add a special writing pen.

2. Give consumable gifts to create less opportunity for clutter. Give an indulgence . something the gift recipient will use up and feel pampered and loved. Bath products are a perennial favorite. Other consumable gift ideas include cookies, cookie mixes, bread mixes, fancy jams and jellies. Keep in mind your recipient's taste and dietary preferences.

3. Give gifts without strings attached. Sure, tie your brown packages (or red, green or blue for that matter) with strings ... just don't give with strings attached. Often, when people receive a gift they feel like they need to keep it forever, simply because it was a gift. It doesn't matter if they love it or use it; since it was a gift they feel obligated to keep it indefinitely. Put your gift recipient at ease by including a gift receipt. Take it a step further by including a note letting your friend know you want them to have something they'll love and enjoy and if what you selected doesn't fit the bill you'd love them to use the gift receipt and select something they'll really love.

4. Give experience gifts. Gift certificates to the movies, dinner out at a favorite restaurant, the spa, or to sporting events create a gift that avoids clutter and doesn't get forgotten the day after it's given. Include young gift recipients in this strategy as well by creating coupons for trips to the park, the zoo or a water slide. This is a gift for your young gift recipient as well as their parents --- a two-for-one gift of sorts.

5. Give gift cards. Do you love to get a gift card? I know I do. Gift cards are a fantastic option for the person on your to-buy list that already has everything or has a wish list full of items that exceed your budget. Consider giving a gift card and having others that are buying for the same person give gift cards from the same store, too. If you select a store with a wide range of product options your gift recipient can pool the gift cards he receives and select something he'll love.

6. Stuff stockings with something useful. The stocking can be a haven for clutter . little things, inexpensive things, breakable things, cluttery things. Avoid this potential clutter trap by going practical . sugar free chewing gum, toothpaste, new toothbrushes, socks, mittens, gloves, card games, or jewelry are all wonderful ways to stuff the stocking without creating clutter.

7. Avoid clutter for yourself by keeping handy ideas of things you'd love to receive. Often, when someone asks what you'd like, it's hard to come up with an idea on the spot. So jot your ideas in a notebook or planner you carry with you. Then, if someone asks what you'd like this year . you'll have ideas at the ready. Seem awkward? Just say "Thanks so much for asking . I do have some things on my wish list this year."

8. Avoid picking up a second for you. I don't spend a lot of time shopping . life is too full of other things for me. So the holidays offer a rare opportunity to get out and do some good, old fashioned shopping. The temptation to pick up just a few things for myself can be great. Does this ever happen to you? You find the perfect gift for someone on your list and pick up a second one for yourself. Yep, I've been guilty, too. This is a great time of year to avoid bringing anything you don't absolutely need into your house. You'll have plenty to do finding homes for all the new things people are out buying for you for your holiday gifts.

Now I'm off to drop my kids off at the Dollar Store so they can buy their unique gifts for us!
